When Dan Carmichael founded this community at the turn of the 20th century, he described a landscape of rolling hills, wooded lots and streams. As it turns out, not much has changed in Carmichael. Though it is now a community of approximately 54,000 residents, Carmichael still boasts wide-open spaces and scenic landscapes. The local government maintains about 200 acres of recreation area, half of which is undeveloped. Just adjacent to Carmichael is the American River Parkway, a 23-mile wildlife and recreation area. Although Carmichael has a distinctly rural feel to it, the community is only about 10 miles northeast of Sacramento, the state’s capital. Tucked away between Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 50, Carmichael offers the best of urban and rural living. Carmichael real estate options include single-family detached homes, estate properties, townhouses, condominiums and land lots. Industries that provide employment in Carmichael include educational, health and social services, professional, scientific, management, administrative and waste management services, retail trade, finance, insurance, real estate including rental and leasing, and public administration. The California State Capitol Museum, Indian Museum and Railroad Museum are popular for visitors and Carmichael residents. In addition, there are at least five state historic parks, including Old Sacramento and Sutter’s Fort, within 10 miles of Carmichael. Carmichael students grades K-12 are served by the nationally-recognized San Juan Unified School District which was selected as one of the top districts in the nation by Money Magazine. Several colleges and universities are also in proximity for those who wish to attain a degree in higher education.
